L’evento fa parte della 726^ Perdonanza celestiniana dell’Aquila. Lo spettacolo nasce dalla richiesta di un “regalo alla città” da parte del sindaco Pierluigi Biondi a Errico Centofanti, ideatore della Perdonanza dell’era moderna nel 1983 – fortemente voluta dall’allora sindaco Tullio De Rubeis – e coordinatore dell’Evento (soprintendente, come si chiamava allora) per dieci anni.

Una richiesta formulata, tra l’altro, in occasione degli 80 anni che Errico Centofanti compirà il 23 agosto, in concomitanza con l’apertura delle celebrazioni della Perdonanza. “Centofanti – sottolinea Biondi – è un appassionato e raffinato studioso, del quale è noto l’amore per L’Aquila, una città alla quale ha saputo dare tanto con la generosità propria di un uomo di cultura. E la cultura è respiro e come tale è di tutti, non di una parte sola. La cultura non esclude, è un terreno in cui le differenze si confrontano per dare contenuto alla bellezza”.

Centofanti, negli anni sessanta fu protagonista, insieme a Peppino Giampaola e Luciano Fabiani, della nascita e affermazione del Teatro Stabile dell’Aquila, attraverso scelte artistiche coraggiose e innovative. “Mettendo da parte la diversità delle idee e parlando la lingua della cultura – ha aggiunto Biondi – con Centofanti abbiamo condiviso i presupposti per realizzare un evento teatrale, che avesse al centro la figura di San Pietro Celestino.

Una figura importante nel pantheon di Centofanti che, per predisporre il progetto della Perdonanza moderna, trascorse mesi nell’Archivio di Stato e in quello dell’Arcivescovado, confrontandosi poi con studiosi come Alessandro Clementi, il soprintendente alle belle arti Renzo Mancini e l’arcivescovo Carlo Martini”. “La notte del gran rifiuto nasce per iniziativa del Sindaco Biondi – rivela Centofanti – al quale devo un ringraziamento caloroso, come pure a quanti lo hanno reso possibile. Questo lavoro vanta un precedente, un mio testo dal titolo ‘Sogno di una notte d’estate’, che nell’88 andò in scena davanti Collemaggio per festeggiare i 700 anni dalla consacrazione della basilica”.

Lo spettacolo racconta cosa accadde la notte tra il 12 e il 13 dicembre 1294, poche ore prima che Celestino V lasciasse le vesti da Pontefice indossate alla fine di agosto dello stesso anno, dopo aver emanato dalla basilica di Collemaggio dell’Aquila, un mese dopo il suo insediamento, quella Bolla del Perdono che rappresenta il primo Giubileo.

The event is part of the 726th Celestinian Forgiveness of L’Aquila. The show was born from the request for a “gift to the city” by the mayor Pierluigi Biondi to Errico Centofanti, creator of the Forgiveness of the modern era in 1983 – strongly desired by the then-mayor Tullio De Rubeis – and coordinator of the Event (superintendent, as it was called then) for ten years.

A request made, among other things, on the occasion of Errico Centofanti’s 80th birthday on 23 August, to coincide with the opening of the celebrations of the Forgiveness. “Centofanti – underlines Biondi – is a passionate and refined scholar, whose love for L’Aquila is known, a city to which he has been able to give so much with the generosity of a man of culture. And culture is breath and as such it belongs to everyone, not just one side. Culture does not exclude, it is a terrain in which differences confront each other to give content to beauty”.

Centofanti, in the sixties, was the protagonist, together with Peppino Giampaola and Luciano Fabiani, of the birth and affirmation of the Teatro Stabile dell’Aquila, through braveand innovative artistic choices. “Putting aside the diversity of ideas and speaking the language of culture – added Biondi – with Centofanti we shared the prerequisites for creating a theatrical event, which centered on the figure of St. Peter Celestino. An important figure in the pantheon of Centofanti who, to prepare the project of modern forgiveness, spent months in the State Archives and in that of the Archbishopric, then comparing himself with scholars such as Alessandro Clementi, the superintendent of fine arts Renzo Mancini and the archbishop Carlo Martini “.

“The night of the great refusal was born on the initiative of the Mayor Biondi – reveals Centofanti – to whom I owe a warm thanks, as well as to those who made it possible. This work boasts a precedent, a text of mine entitled ‘A summer night’s dream’, which in 1988 was staged in front of Collemaggio to celebrate the 700th anniversary of the consecration of the basilica”.

The play tells what happened on the night between 12 and 13 December 1294, a few hours before Celestine V left the pontiff’s robes worn at the end of August of the same year, after having emanated from the basilica of Collemaggio dell’Aquila, a month later his settlement, the Bull of Forgiveness which represents the first Jubilee.
